The Truth About Laundry Per Kg vs Per Item Pricing
When choosing a laundry service in Dubai, pricing is one of the first things you compare. Some services charge by the kilogram, others by the item. The cheaper-looking option is not always the better deal. Here is an honest breakdown to help you make the right choice for your situation.
How Per-Kilogram Pricing Works
Per-kg laundry services weigh your bag at drop-off and charge a flat rate per kilogram, typically AED 8 to AED 15 per kg in Dubai. Your clothes go into a shared wash cycle (sorted by colour) with garments from other customers. They are washed, dried, folded, and returned. This model works like a commercial laundromat with pickup and delivery convenience.
The appeal is obvious: it sounds cheap. If your bag weighs 5 kg and the rate is AED 10/kg, you pay AED 50 for what might be 15-20 items. But there are important limitations. Per-kg services typically do not separate your delicates from your jeans. They use a standard wash cycle and generic detergent for everything. Stains may not receive individual attention. And items are not individually inspected — if a button was loose before washing, it may be missing after.
How Per-Item Pricing Works
Per-item services charge a set price for each garment type: a shirt might be AED 8, trousers AED 10, a dress AED 15. Each item is inspected individually, washed according to its fabric type, and finished (ironed or pressed) to specification. Stains are pre-treated, buttons are checked, and damaged items are flagged before processing.
The total bill is higher than per-kg for the same number of items, but you are paying for individual attention. Your silk blouse is not tumbling around with someone else's denim. Your dress shirt is pressed on a shirt form, not just folded. Per-item services are what you want for work clothes, nice casual wear, and anything you care about looking sharp.
When Each Option Makes Sense
Per-kg is a good choice for: large volumes of casual clothing, gym wear, children's play clothes, towels, and basics like socks and underwear. If you have a family of four and generate mountains of everyday laundry, per-kg keeps costs manageable. Think of it as the practical option for items where appearance is secondary to cleanliness.
Per-item is the right choice for: work shirts, business casual, dresses, items with embellishment or delicate fabric, and anything you iron before wearing. If you attend client meetings or simply care about looking polished, per-item service pays for itself by keeping your clothes in better condition for longer. Many of our customers use both — per-kg for the weekly basics and per-item for their work wardrobe.
Hidden Costs and Considerations
With per-kg services, be aware of minimum weight requirements (often 3-5 kg). If you only have 2 kg of laundry, you may pay for the minimum anyway. Also, per-kg services rarely include ironing in the base price — folded, yes, but not pressed. If you need items ironed, that is usually an additional charge that can close the price gap with per-item service.
With per-item services, the key is to compare like for like. A service charging AED 6 for a shirt with poor pressing is not cheaper than one charging AED 9 with professional finishing. Check what is included: does the price cover stain treatment? Buttons? Packaging? And consider garment longevity — rough handling in per-kg washes shortens the life of your clothes, which has a real cost even if it does not appear on the bill.
